What to Expect After a Session

After completing a session, it is important to be aware of what to expect. While individual experiences may vary, there are common reactions and outcomes that many people experience that may last for 24-72 hours.

Processing trauma and difficult targets can be intense and may bring up a broad range of emotional, mental and physical reactions.  It is normal to feel tired and emotionally drained, yet you should never leave a session with emotional dysregulation higher than when you started.  It is ALWAYS appropriate to share with your therapist where you are at.  There are multiple techniques that can be employed to reduce overall emotional charge.

It is important to allow yourself time and space to rest and take care of yourself.

In the hours and days following the session, you may notice a shift in your emotions and perceptions.

Some people report feeling lighter, calmer, and more at ease. Others may experience increased awareness or new insights about themselves and their experiences.

It is common to have dreams or thoughts related to the session as your mind continues to process the material.

It is also possible to experience some temporary discomfort or an increase in symptoms after a trauma session.  This temporary discomfort can last for a few hours or even a few days. It is important to be kind to yourself.  This is the brain re-processing the experience.

Overall, trauma therapy can be transformative and empowering. Many people report a significant reduction in distressing symptoms, improved emotional well-being, and increased resilience. With continued support and following a daily practice that you define for yourself, you can heal from past trauma and create a brighter future.
